PC02 - Use Language to Promote Health Equity

Diabetes is a complex condition that requires ongoing, rigorous self-management for optimal outcomes. People with diabetes (PWD) often require care, support and special education to help sustain the burdensome taxonomy of treatment and self-management plans1 they must maintain. Language is the primary way PWD receive and experience care, support and education, yet there is very little discussion about the language used in these encounters with PWD.2 A recent study concluded that PWD have negative experiences when they hear language that they previously identified as judgmental or stigmatizing.3 This affects motivation, behavior and outcomes.
