Since the first glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist came to market in the United States in 2005, the incretin mimetic class of medications has evolved both in drug development and understanding of clinical effects. Now with indications for type 2 diabetes, weight management, and cardiovascular risk reduction as well as emerging evidence in other areas, this medication class is prescribed more broadly than ever before. As a result, understanding the safety and efficacy data for utilization of the incretin mimetic medication class is foundational in providing care for people with diabetes.
