Diabetes-related nephropathy is a preventable microvascular complication in people with diabetes (PWD). When left untreated, it can lead to chronic kidney disease (CKD) which increases the cost of care, the risk of complications, and the need for dialysis. A multidisciplinary approach to care is necessary for people with CKD. In addition to optimizing glucose and blood pressure management, PWD should undergo timely screening and dietary counseling, and receive adequate pharmacotherapy to prevent this complication. This session will examine strategies to minimize kidney injury through early detection and screening, nutrition counseling, and the use of guideline-directed blood pressure and glucose-lowering therapies.
