Greater than 60% of people with diabetes have obesity and may be eligible for metabolic surgery, which can lead to remission or improvement of diabetes. Focusing on the updated American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and American Diabetes Association guideline recommendations, this session will review new criteria for metabolic surgery eligibility and follow a person through the pre/post-surgical process, highlighting key pharmacologic considerations at each step. Presenters will review long-term recommendations for mitigating diabetes recurrence and weight regain after metabolic surgery and will emphasize the role of DCES in caring for people with diabetes undergoing metabolic surgery.
