Psychological trauma, often caused by adverse childhood experiences, negatively impacts health outcomes. Psychological trauma has been shown to create looping feelings of shame and guilt that thwart a client’s efforts toward self-care, as well as weight and glycemic stability. This session reviews the tenets of trauma-informed care, including how to cautiously identify when a trauma history exists and how to engage clients in meaningful and healing conversations. Attendees will learn the 5 concepts of trauma-informed care and several unique skills that clinicians can immediately incorporate into their practice to improve client outcomes and reduce clinician burnout.
