Have you ever finished explaining something and afterwards your patient has a glazed look in their eyes? We want our patients to know what is occurring in their bodies but sometimes we miss the mark by misjudging someone’s health literacy level. We may accidentally clutter a visit with word jargon like cells, glucose, and hyperglycemia. We need to take these concepts, paint a picture, and let it come alive in front of them. This presentation discusses how to assess for understanding and how to lighten science through real-life examples like comparing insulin resistance to bringing groceries into our home.
