People with type 1 diabetes are twice as likely to develop an eating disorder compared to those who do not have diabetes. Individuals with T1D also have a unique type of purging which involves manipulating insulin to lose/control weight. Insulin manipulation often goes unrecognized for quite some time, and if discovered, the medical team is often uncertain of what would be most supportive in their patient’s recovery. This session reviews interdisciplinary strategies for working with patients with T1D and eating disorders and highlights the criteria, process, and benefits of referrals to a higher level of care.
