P203 - Using Design Thinking to Target and Tailor DPP and DSMES across Three Phenotypes of Vietnamese Americans

Diabetes is a growing problem among Asian Americans. There is currently a misalignment between the increasing disease burden and effective resources. Typical approaches to adapting the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) and Diabetes Self-Management Education Services (DSMES) program for Asian Americans have focused on group-based cultural tailoring (e.g. linguistic translations and content modifications for each ethnic group). However, there are limitations to the “one-size-fits-all” approach due to wide within-group variability that results from intersections among many identities and social determinants of health factors. Therefore, the community is now calling for more personalized approaches. Psychosocial phenotyping and cluster analysis are potential tools for personalization and can be combined with human-centered design principles for maximum “stickiness.” This poster describes a study aimed to (1) identify psychosocial phenotypes/clusters of Vietnamese Americans with or at risk for diabetes, and (2) use human-centered design principles to develop tailored interventions that match the needs of varying phenotypic clusters of Vietnamese Americans.
