P210 - Chop It Like It's Hot – Implementing Culinary Medicine in a Clinical Setting

Culinary medicine (CM) uses cooking and food preparation skills to augment nutrition education and improve dietary patterns that influence health outcomes. This poster shares how Harris Health, a large safety-net healthcare system, embeds a population health approach as part of the standard of care for diabetes management in primary care. CM was designed to improve health outcomes of patients with diabetes who expressed food insecurity through instruction in culinary skills, the use of low-cost food items, and diabetes-specific nutrition instruction. The poster author outlines clinician experiences and patients’ improvements in knowledge and healthy behaviors through CM education.
