P208 - Association Between History of Open Chest/Abdominal Surgery and HbA1c: An NHANES Study

When communicating the importance of managing HbA1c levels and preventing downstream exacerbations of diabetes, the severity and the likelihood of surgical interventions are often captured by abstract language and an unclear timeline. It can be difficult to convey the reality of disease exacerbations and the impact that the sequelae may have on quality of life. By investigating the direct relationship between HbA1c levels and the history of surgical intervention, the abstract notion of surgical implications can be made clear for greater patient understanding, and further demonstrate the importance of diabetes prevention and management. This poster discusses a study that utilized a cross-sectional design with almost two decades of data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), a national database encompassing respondent surveys and lab values from 2007 to March 2020. Seven quantitative variables (HbA1c, LDL, Triglycerides, Total Cholesterol, Systolic Blood Pressure, Diastolic Blood Pressure, and HDL) were identified as indicators for metabolic and cardiovascular health. The association was quantified by an odds ratio through a logistic regression model and adjusted for confounding factors. Additional analysis was also conducted to investigate the associations within sub-groups.
