P207 - Addressing Health Inequities & Improving Access to Tobacco Cessation Services in a Safety Net Population

Extensive evidence indicates that smoking tobacco significantly increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 30% to 40% as well as the risk of diabetes-related complications such as cardiovascular disease compared with individuals that don’t smoke. Currently, smokers in the US are disproportionately represented in low-income populations with healthcare disparities. This poster reviews a public health initiative to address health inequities and improve access to tobacco cessation services in this priority population. The program was designed to build on infrastructure and service capacity for a sustainable tobacco cessation treatment pathway through a systems-level approach.
