P206 - Assessing Health Literacy in Patients with Diabetes

Health literacy is the “degree to which individuals obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services to make informed health decisions” (Carbone and Zoellner, 2012). Poor health literacy, including limited interpretation, readability/numeracy, and action of health information, has been shown to perpetuate preventable diseases and limit effective disease management, including diabetes. The Newest Vital Sign (NVS) Health Literacy Assessment has shown to be a beneficial indicator in determining patients' health literacy and its influence on their current disease state. This poster discusses a study that aims to utilize the NVS tool to gain more insight into the health literacy of patients with diabetes, what adjustments they can make to their nutritional intake and the education they need from their providers.
