P236 - Interrupting Patterns of Frequent DKA Admissions: A Case Study

It is estimated that recurrent DKA readmissions cost the United States approximately $2.6 billion annually, with an increased risk of both morbidity and mortality. Often, these patients are of lower socioeconomic status, have numerous social determinants of health issues, lower health literacy, and are uninsured or underinsured. This poster highlights a case study that reflects on an experience with a person with T1D with excessive ER visits and hospital admissions. The author points out several opportunities that could be identified and used as learning experiences to intervene and interrupt these patterns optimizing the health of patients, health systems, and communities.
