Inpatient falls occur even with standardized approaches to fall prevention. Annually, preventable inpatient fall events cost America’s healthcare system $17 billion a year. Falls contribute to increased morbidity and mortality. Unmanaged diabetes contributes to sensory impairment. Fall assessments currently do not include determining the presence of foot sensation before ambulating. The significant rise in the prevalence of patients with diabetes in the hospital heightens the risk of a fall event. This poster summarizes the results of a small pilot study of an inpatient post-fall assessment that includes bilateral testing of foot sensation using the Semmes-Weinstein monofilament as a potential consideration for future screening and fall prevention.
