Diabetes impacts the lives of millions of Americans in the U.S. today. Insulin is used to manage inpatients with diabetes at our institution. Patient-specific bulk medications (like insulin pens) are frequently wasted during transitions such as transfers to other units. Medication waste has a significant impact on the health care budget and poses detrimental effects on the environment. These duplicated, inefficient practices generate waste and environmental burdens, adding unnecessary costs to care shared by the patients, the institution, and the health system. This poster summarizes specific actions that were implemented to help reduce insulin pen waste at their hospital.
