P509 - Implementing a Culturally Adapted mHealth DSMES Intervention for the Vietnamese Community

Vietnamese Americans have 60% higher odds of being diagnosed with diabetes as compared to non-Hispanic whites. While diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) programs are offered widely, they remain inaccessible and inappropriate for Vietnamese-speaking individuals due to the language barrier and cultural differences. This poster describes how the authors developed and piloted an interactive, culturally adapted Fully Automated Messaging (FAM) intervention (N=85) in collaboration with 10 primary care clinics in Oklahoma. The theoretically based and multidimensional FAM intervention delivered DSMES through smartphones to help patients gain diabetes knowledge and build tactics to manage their condition effectively. It also utilized the Clinical Data Interoperability Services (CDIS), an advanced feature of REDCap, to interact with an electronic health record (EHR) and pull selected information from the EHR into REDCap. This information was used to generate patient reminders for diabetes self-care including but not limited to daily glucose monitoring, taking medications, vaccination, and annual specialty examination. Additionally, accessing EHR allowed the research team to pull clinical lab test data into REDCap for analysis.
