P413 - Investigation of Health Care for Persons with Diabetes and Mental Illness

Individuals with mental illness are at 2-4 times greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes and CVD is the leading cause of death in this population. A review of the diabetes and mental health literature demonstrates a need for more intensive screening for diabetes and education for both patients and for healthcare workers outside their original scope of practice (i.e., diabetes education for psychiatric healthcare professionals). Coordinated care between Mental Health Professionals and Physical Healthcare Providers is routinely concluded. This poster summarizes research studies and interventions addressing these issues, focusing on both the inpatient and outpatient settings.
